Hvannadalshnúkur - 2119 m

The highest mountain of Iceland
Continent: Europe     Country: Iceland     Mountains: Volcano     Difficulty: for beginners

Iceland – "the land of fire and ice" is an island situated on the Polar Circle, near Greenland. It is famous for its geysers, volcanos and glaciers. It is known as the most beautiful country of Europe( in terms of visual values and nature) but also as the most expensive country in the world.

In the south-east part of Iceand is located the biggest glacier in Europe and the third in the world - Vatnajökull. It has an area of 8,800 km2. In the western part of the glacier there is Skaftáfell National Park.

The highest point of the glacier is a volcano Hvannadalshnúkur which is also the highest peak of Iceland. Additional attractions are geysers, geothermal basins and "ice lagoons" that is, glacier's tongues reaching the Atlantic Ocean.

The highest mountain of Iceland, wild nature, polar climate, glacers and geysers
Frostbites, crevasses
The target of our expedition is located in the south-east of Iceland. The most difficult mountain element is a glacier that we have to cross in order to reach the peak. Generally, rock difficulties do not occur; our worst enemy will be a hurricane wind which blows like a Jumbo Jet engine. Reaching Hvannadalshnúkur should take us one day, starting from a base camp. Although Iceland lies on the Polar Circle, the climate is quite warm due to warm Atlantic currents that surround the island. So don't worry, these are no Artic conditions.

Our plan includes sightseeing of the area near the glacier Vatnajökull and of the town Höfn. For the ornithologists, geologists, glaciologists and natural scientists it will be a fascinating adventure. Many very rare specimen can be found there. In case of weather problems, we will modify our plan and limit visits to ''non-mountain'' places.

If we have enough time, we will try (in the second option) to reach the peak of the Faroe Islands - Slaettaratindur and Kunoyarnakkur – the highest cape of Europe.

Iceland is known for being the most expensive country in the world so our program is very economical, that is, we sleep only in tents and prepare meals by ourselves.

Of course, when we will reach the peak – we will make a party! We will celebrate our success with a specific (like it was during the expedition in Transylvania where garlic and wooden dowels were taken). But this time it will be another specific - the most popular Polish product – of course, in a liquid state ;-)
The fact that a famous singer Björk lives in Reykjavik is also o a great importance. She will be our mental supporter!
