MOUNT KORAB
Continent: Europe     Country: Albania     Mountains: Mount Korab     Difficulty: for beginners

Korab (Alb. Mali i Korabit) – a large mountain massif located on the Balkan Peninsula on the border of Albania and Macedonii. The highest peak of the massif, Korab, is 2764 m high. There are nine peaks that are higher than 2000 m and the highest passes of the region, i.e. Porta e Korabit të Vogël (2465 m) and Porta e Korabit të Madh (2062 m). the massif stretches over 40 km from N to S. Korab is the highest peak of both Macedonia and Albania. It is the second summit after Mont Blanc, that is the highest point for more than one country. It is also the 12th highest "national peak" in Europe. The name "Korab" comes from Slavic languages and derives from name of the Slavic god of sea.

The terrain has geologically complicated structure; the main components are limestone and dolomite. Krast topography is very common (caves, ponors, flysches, sinkholes). Despite poximity of the Mediterranean Sea, the tempetarure can reach even minus 40 in winter.

The highest peak of Albania, intact nature, wandering in the wilderness, unique climate

Herding dogs, difficulties with orientation, sudden weather changes

Albania is a mysterious country, some kind of an island on the map of Europe. Thanks to communism, it has been efficiently isolated from the European civilization for many years. However, Albania is inhabited by very nice people who want to change their fatherland, to make up for lost time and to shorten the distace from the highly developed countries. Albania is changing and becoming beautiful; instead of the omnipresent Enver Hoxha's bukers, people build houses, utility buildings and improve the quality of roads. Active participation in this process and supporting Albanian people in their efforst is Europe's obligation.

Our Club wants to help in creating tourism infrastructure that practically does not exist in mountain areas of Albania. Of course, thanks to this, mountains save their uniqueness and spotlessness which are great merits of the region; however, the lack of infrastructure is also an obstacle to travelling and developement of tourism as a branch of industry. Therefore, we undertake to mark up a route to the highest mountain o Albania, Mount Korab (2764 m). We are planning to start in a village Kala e Dodes and lead the route across pasture land located at the foot of the massif and then across the rocky slopes to the peak. Our Club made a reconnaissance expedition to the Korab Mountains in 2008, during which we created the project of the route and we found a line with difficulties appropriate for tourists.

In this season, we want to paint signs on the route and hang necessary information boards. All the actions that we are planning to take on the territory of the Republic of Albania have been consulted with embassy of this country in Poland.

If we are successful, we will be able to organize expeditions to Korab by the PKA route in next years. What is more, we will be able to plan ascents of another local summits that are as high and beautiful Gerlach in Tatra Mountains.

This project is directed to people of good will who want to spend their free time in mountains on hard work for others. I believe that our work will bring measurable benefits to residents o this region and will contribute to developement of broadly understood mountain culture in Albania.
